History of Jeep Lenoir City, TN

Few brands can boast a history as well-known and explosive as Jeep-which makes it doubly fascinating that we have no real idea how the name "Jeep" itself came about.

What we do know is that the four-wheel vehicle that eventually took that name came about as the result of a competition between two companies-the most American way there is. When the United States began to prepare to fight in World War II, the U.S. Army contacted 135 companies asking for working prototypes of a four-wheel drive recon vehicle.

Only two answered the call: American Bantam Car Company and Willys-Overland. The latter felt that the 49-day deadline was impossible and the former had no engineering staff left on the payroll, so they solicited a freelance designer from Detroit named Karl Probst. In two days, he'd come up with full plans for the Bantam Reconnaissance Car.

Though it met their requirements, the Army felt Bantam was too small to supply enough vehicles and shared the design with Willys as well as Ford, who were encouraged to make modifications of their own. Ultimately, however, the Willys model became the standardized design and the only real change that stuck was the pressed-metal Jeep grille, a feature added by Ford.

Eventually, a total 640,000 Jeeps were produced toward the war effort, accounting for about 18% of all the wheeled military vehicles build by the U.S. during WWII. Every service of the U.S. military used them as field ambulances, tractors, firefighting pumpers, as well as for cable laying and saw milling. Jeeps quickly became renowned as a symbol of military leadership, creativity, and freedom.

Nobody really knows how they started being called "Jeeps," but one thing was certain: after the war, everyone wanted one. Having earned fame as a war hero, production versions of the Jeep won American consumers over and became known as the first off-road recreational vehicle.

Throughout the years, ownership of the Willys-Overland company and of the Jeep brand switched hands multiple times, but the reliability, capability, and rugged good looks for which the vehicles were known never did. Today, the latest models combine over 50 years of engineering and technology excellence with the classic styling and practicality of a Jeep vehicle. Check them out at Lenoir City Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram today and join a great legacy!
